Not sure if it is worth the extra cash for the 980 over the 960. However, I would say that the 900 series ones are vastly superior to the lower level models due to their navigation skills. (I had an older model Roomba and was always annoyed that it would just bounce around rather than methodically cleaning everything.)

It depends on your goal, since the Roomba is to be used in addition to your normal cleaning regimen. If you vacuum with an upright every week and want to achieve the same results without doing the work, you will be disappointed. If you vacuum every three months and want something to keep things cleaner in between, Roomba is the best thing ever.

To answer the question in short, yes! The Roomba does work. Our family uses it on our hardwood floors and rugs. Now that I have one, I'm not sure how I ever lived without it. The thing zigzags through my house and picks up some nasty dirt and pet hair from many unexplored corners of the house.
