Well, if you have an extra budget lying around you should get an M.2 Type M, it will be better and faster than any other SATA-based SSD. Also I need to warn you, M.2 drives (or at least, the good ones) are pretty expensive at this moment, my 960 EVO cost me around $129 (250GB model), so …
[Build Help] Mobo lists M.2 port, pcpartpicker says it's incompatible with M.2 SSD Building a NAS/HTPC and want to boot off of M.2 SSD so that I leave 3.5" bays free for data HDDs. So I picked the following SSD and Motherboard (linking to manufacturer spec pages):

Oct 06, 2021 · Thats a sata m.2 ssd not an nvme m.2 ssd, id say ditch the hdd and get a 1tb nvme ssd, you can always add extra storage in the future, id suggest going for a kingston a2000 or silicon power a80 ssd That case looks like it has no airflow, swap it for something that has a mesh front panel, i suggest a p400a case wise (comes in rgb and non rgb)

A super-fast M.2 SSD! Literally the perfect M.2 just to store my OS and other small programs which I'd like to open quickly. Would opt for a larger capacity if you can as the 240GB doesn't really get you very far, if not it's good for your OS and other small programs such as Chrome and Discord for example. Really great component.
Samsung 850 EVO 500 GB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive (MZ
Crazy fast, saves space in the case and uses less wires than the SATA version. The fastest SSD any normal user will need, you won't notice the difference between this and the 960 PRO unless you are doing video editing. Not a bad SSD at all. My first of this form factor but it performs identical to the standard SSD.
M.2 just refers to the form factor; you can have M.2 drives at SATA speeds and faster NVMe drives. Both of the drives listed will perform the same. I would get something like this. https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/product/6j448d/western-digital-blue-500gb-m2-2280 …
