A materials scientist translates between what the chemists and physicists are working on, to what the engineering researchers are working on. They are responsible for the research, design, and development of materials, and will focus on how the physical structure of a certain material will affect the property of the material.
Materials science or materials engineering is an interdisciplinary field involving the properties of material (matter) and its applications to various areas of science and engineering. This science investigates the relationship between the composition (including structure of materials at atomic or molecular scales) and their macroscopic properties.
Job Outlook. Employment of materials engineers is projected to show little or no change from 2018 to 2028. Materials engineers will be needed to design uses for new materials both in traditional industries, such as aerospace manufacturing, and in industries focused on new medical or scientific products.
